Plato studied under Socrates and was Aristotle's teacher. Together these three Greeks developed the basis of philosophical thinking for the entire Western world. Plato was also a writer, mathematician, and founder of the Academy in Athens, which was the first university in Europe. Charmides is a dialogue in which Socrates engages a popular boy in a conversation about the meaning of sophrosyne, a Greek word usually translated "temperance," "self-control," or "restraint." Many important points are raised, but as is with many dialogues no satisfactory conclusion is reached.

This translation and is an absolute delight to read! I don't know if it's true to the Greek but it is refreshing to find a translation that flows like poetry and actually makes sense. Not only that, but the characters, particularly Charmides, are fleshed out in a way that makes them almost seem real!Product details

Charmides Illustrated edition by Plato Plato Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
This dialogue is a bit strange. Similar to Philebus in which the discussion centers around defining the good life but gets distracted by subordinate points, this dialogue gets listenable attempting to define temperance. Nevertheless, the dialogue provides interesting examples of intellectual modesty that aid the discussion. While Charmides is worth reading, other books will give a clearer picture of temperance.
