Six rare powers govern the land of Adamah. Possessing one demands entrance to the king’s army. To refuse means death.

For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king's army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule.

To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death. When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path.

POWERS OF THE SIX take you to another world where the smallest person can do extraordinary things, the undead infest the night, and the sun emits more than just warmth and light.

This book is told with two main point of view characters. We first met Nolan who is a scribe and desperately trying to keep his Shay a secret. We also met Alec who is a head strong youth who wants to raise against the government. There are six powers that rule Adamah which give people inhuman abilities. They are Strength, Accuracy, Healing, Empathy, Perception, and Speed. The king governs the land and he is a foul and vile king. It is absolutely awful. There are a few who stand up against but most fear him. Nolan and Alec met and go on an epic adventure together where a friendship is formed and legends are made.

This book started off to a slow start. It wasn't a bad slow but fairly interesting slow start. It was a slow build to a fast paced ending. The main characters were developed and I understood them. I felt like I was getting to know my new friends. It was fun and exciting and I didn't want to let them go. Alec was my favorite because he was just honest about everything. He didn't care what came out of his mouth it would just flow like word vomit. He made me feel the most emotion. I laughed and got angry with him. It was a fantastic book relationship that I look forward to returning to.

The plot was easy to understand and flowed nicely. I could easily imagine Adamah and all the characters that came around. It was so interesting that I found myself daydreaming about living in Adamah and what my Shay would be. I think my Shay would be Empathy but it is only because I love purple so much. There is a lot that happened through book one and it felt like several books which left me feeling satisfied.

The villi ans are spectacular. The King is absolutely the most hated villain I have ever encountered. I hated him so much it would upset my stomach just thinking about him. He is twisted and cunning. I just wanted him to die constantly. The other villain is Kael. I loved to hate him. You would see a glimpse of sincere, caring person that would quickly vanish to a pompous, arrogant jerk. He would drive me nuts but I see great potential in him. The villains were perfect because you had one to hate and one to cheer for. It was quite a great combination.

My favorite part was Alec's attitude at the tournament. It was just so teenager. It was funny and he kept putting his foot in his mouth. It was also the time where is relationship with Nolan would begin. It was a fun friendship to watch. When I look back after I finish on how much these two grew and changed it was remarkable. I'm glad I got to go with them on their journey.

I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I will be intrigued to find out what book two has in store for us. I would recommend this book to any of my older fantasy loving friends.

Powers of the Six Emissary of Light Book 1 eBook Kristal Shaff Anne Drury Courtney Koschel Reviews

I’m not usually a huge fantasy reader so I wasn’t sure how much I’d like this book, but I absolutely loved it! The Shay powers were just cool and I (being a history buff) really loved the medieval setting. The characters are what make this book truly fantastic. Nolan, the main character, decides to hide his Shay power of Accuracy so he can avoid having to serve in the evil king’s army. The journey he takes from someone who hides who and what he is to being a main force behind the rebellion against the king kept me glued to the pages. The other characters in the book are well fleshed out and an integral part of the story, not just there as filler. Alec, Megan and Emery in particular I absolutely loved. Between the magical elements, the rebellion against a psychotically evil king, the group of rebels who band together to become a family of sorts who fight and sacrifice for each other, amazing fighting scenes, truly creepy zombie-like creatures who add even more danger to the game, and even a bit of romance, this definitely goes on my “must read” list – I highly recommend!
I found this series as I am waiting for another author to complete their next installment. I enjoyed the read, liked the concept of the powers and the world setting. The story covers a multitude of Internal character conflicts as well as action conflicts allowing the reader to become more immersed. After finishing this book, I immediately began the next wondering what might develop with Nolan, Alec and the rest.

The lack of the 5th star is mostly due to editing issues I had difficulty with. For example, some uses of contractions allowed for a dual meaning and it made me reread the section once the meaning I first selected mentally didn't fit. I see this as a proofreading/editing issue that typically resolves itself as an author becomes more experienced. These editing issues were far and few between so the distraction was minimal.

To Kristal, keep up the great work and also keep in mind that the challenge of writing a book is very different than an ability to critique it. I am not an author, but I have read many books and appreciate that difference. I look forward to reading the rest of the series as you complete it.
Vague spoilers ahead I enjoyed this book but it was very rushed. The author tried to cram a little too much in the first book and the story was a light on explanation when it came to Brim and the stones. The creatures in the woods were easy to identify early on and this is not the first time I have encountered that story line in a fantasy novel. Because so much was crammed into one book, there were alot of characters to follow and I lost track of who a couple of them were when they were eliminated near the end. The book was 5 stars until the trials were over and then it became choppy and rushed. The only character that had any reason to follow Nolan out of the trials was Alec. No reason was given on why the cousin would follow him and risk treason and a hanging. It would have been nice to know how the king was even capable of getting into power like he did. You would think the stones would have been more of a challenge to find. Just so much left out only to have the teaser to the second book be a "religious type mission". "Walk among the people. Tell them the truth. Many will not believe but spread my message." I feel like I already finished the story. Not sure I want to follow this new adventure.
